The Legacy of Domenico Trezzini: A Family Story Across Generations
Our family’s heritage is deeply intertwined with history, art, and architecture, and it all begins with Domenico Trezzini, our maternal ancestor. Born in Astano, Switzerland, Domenico was a brilliant architect whose talents caught the attention of none other than Peter the Great, Emperor of Russia. In 1703, Domenico was invited by the Emperor himself to design and build the new capital of Russia, Saint Petersburg.
Trezzini’s architectural vision laid the foundations for Saint Petersburg’s iconic style. His work combined Western European techniques with Russian traditions, creating a unique architectural identity that continues to define the city today. His most notable works include the Peter and Paul Fortress, along with the majestic Peter and Paul Cathedral, which stands as a landmark in Saint Petersburg. Additionally, the Twelve Collegia Building, now the main building of Saint Petersburg University, and Peter’s Summer House count among his many achievements. Trezzini’s contributions also extended beyond Saint Petersburg—he was instrumental in founding and designing Kronstadt and the Alexander Nevsky Monastery, further solidifying his influence on Russian architecture.
A Gift of Friendship from Peter the Great
In recognition of Domenico Trezzini’s extraordinary contributions, Peter the Great, alongside his wife Catherine II, bestowed upon him a precious gift, a finely crafted silver snuffbox. This item has survived wars and the passage of time, passed down through generations as one of the few tangible connections to our ancestor’s illustrious past. Its intricate design and significance have made it a cherished family heirloom.
An Artifact Documenting History
In addition to this gift, we have also preserved a letter from one of our ancestors, recounting the monumental task Domenico undertook in building Saint Petersburg. This document describes his journey from Switzerland to Russia with 25,000 craftsmen, as well as his lasting contributions to Russian architecture. It serves as a powerful link between our family and the historical events of that era, offering personal insights into Domenico’s achievements and his close relationship with the Russian royal family.
